When Did "tipping" Become Mandatory

Forgive me Andy Rooney, I heard you speak on this topic and I cannot help it. The point needs to be restated. You go to a nice restaurant and you are inflicted with the waitress from Hades. Service is slow, rude or even not there and the waitstaff is expecting a tip? I say no. Where in the constitution does it say Thou wilt tip the waitstaff? No where! Tipping, in my opinion, should go to those who deserve it. It should go to those who go above and beyond the expected. After all, they are paid by their employer do complete the very task we patrons are asking them to do. The task being to bring us our food the way we ordered it. It's the extras that should be rewarded. Prompt service, pleasant attitude, attention to the needs of meal. Why should we be obligated to pay a tip? Some eateries even put the charge for a tip on the bill. This is outrageous in my book. I say if you as a waiter or waitress want a tip: then earn it! Give me the extra attention. Check in on me during the meal. "Is there anything I can get you sir?", can go along way with me. God help you if should forget to tip one of these folks, you just might be run out of town.

What about buffets? Should you be expected to tip a waitress at a Sizzler or "All You Can Eat"?
I mean you are serving yourself. Again, if you receive extra service from the waitstaff, sure. But, no one helps you then I say no.

Remember the days when ladies like those pictured new what good service meant? They were gracious, ready and able to serve your dining needs. The smiled and you were treated with respect. These ladies new the way to a good tip.
